The island at the end of the bus line
Bantayan sits off the northern tip of Cebu, flat and white-sanded where the main island is steep and grey. Santa Fe's beaches, the sandbar at Virgin Island, the old Spanish church in Bantayan town and a slower pace than anything within reach of the city have made it the weekend escape for Cebuanos for decades, and it is famous nationally for one week a year: Holy Week, when the island's centuries-old dispensation to eat meat during the Lenten fast turns the Good Friday procession into a festival, and every ferry to Santa Fe sells out.
Getting there is the part everyone tolerates rather than enjoys. From Cebu City you take a bus or van from the North Bus Terminal to the port at Hagnaya, three to four hours up the coast in good traffic, then a ferry of an hour or so across to Santa Fe. Door to door from a Mactan hotel it is a five- to six-hour morning, and at Holy Week or a long weekend the queue at Hagnaya alone can absorb half of that again. The last ferry back leaves in the afternoon, so a day trip is not really possible and a weekend loses its Friday and its Sunday to the road.
Thirty minutes from Mactan
A chartered Cessna 172 leaves the general-aviation side of Mactan-Cebu International Airport, tracks up the eastern coast of Cebu past Danao and Sogod, and lands on Bantayan about half an hour later. There is no pier, no queue and no ferry timetable in that sentence. The price is for the whole aircraft, three seats, and it is the lowest-priced leg in the Cebu network:

CEB RPSB
Cessna 172 · up to 3 passengers · 54 kg luggage
Whole aircraft
₱46,200
$800

Split three ways, that is a per-person figure a great many Cebu households spend on a long weekend without a second thought, and it buys back the better part of two days. It also changes what a Bantayan trip can be. A day trip becomes honest: breakfast in the city, the sandbar at Virgin Island by mid-morning, and back on Mactan for dinner with the aircraft waiting at the strip in between. A three-day weekend becomes three days on the island rather than one and a half. The route page has both directions and the standard questions: Cebu to Bantayan by private aircraft.
When it makes the most sense
- Holy Week and long weekends. The ferry queue is the trip's weakest link exactly when the island is at its best. An aircraft has no queue, and a booking made a week ahead holds its time.
- Arriving from abroad. An international arrival at Mactan can be on the beach at Santa Fe within the hour instead of at the end of a second travel day. The charter meets you on the same airfield.
- Short stays. Two nights on Bantayan with a road-and-ferry transfer is really one full day. Flown, it is two.
- The rest of the arc. Bantayan is the northern end of a network that runs down to Panglao, Siquijor and Camiguin. The Cebu charter hub guide lists every leg with its time and price.
Know before you fly
It is a light aircraft and a small strip, so operations are in daylight and the weather has the last word: when the north-east monsoon is blowing hard in December and January the operator may propose a different time, and a flight that cannot go is not charged. Three seats means three people including children, and the luggage allowance on the price card is for the whole cabin, so pack soft bags. Facilities at the strip are minimal; tricycles and vans are a phone call away rather than a rank, and the operator will arrange one if you ask when you book. The booking itself is a request the operator confirms, usually within hours, before any payment link is sent. If your dates are loose, look at the empty-legs board too: a Cebu-based aircraft repositioning north with empty seats is the cheapest way onto the island there is.
