The island everyone reaches the same slow way
Siquijor earned its reputation the old way: Spanish sailors called it the Island of Fire for its swarms of fireflies, and generations of healers gave it a mystique the rest of the country still half-believes. Today the draws are more tangible — Cambugahay's tiered turquoise falls, the old balete tree with its fish spa, Salagdoong's cliff jumps, Paliton beach's sunset — but the arrival ritual hasn't changed in decades.
You fly to Dumaguete, taxi to the pier, queue for a ferry, cross the strait, and surface at Siquijor town an hour and change later — if the schedule and the swell cooperate. Coming from Cebu without flying, it's most of a day at sea — unless you happen to land one of Sunlight Air's Cebu–Siquijor seats, a thin scheduled link that only started in December 2025, flies a handful of times a week, and sells out early. For nearly everyone else, the pier is still assumed to be the only door.
What landing on-island changes
- Cebu to Siquijor in about half an hour. The charter overflies the entire fly-taxi-queue-ferry chain and delivers you minutes from the coastal road that rings the island.
- Day trips become honest. With the ferry, a Siquijor "day trip" from Dumaguete loses its morning and evening to the pier. With an aircraft waiting at the strip, sunrise at Cambugahay and dinner back in Cebu is a real itinerary.
- The strait stops being a variable. Ferry sailings hold when the swell picks up, and the last boat leaves early. A light aircraft's weather decisions are its own — and rescheduling a 15-minute hop is nothing like salvaging a missed crossing.
- It slots into the bigger arc. Siquijor sits mid-route on the five-island Visayas circuit — Panglao behind you, Camiguin ahead — which is why our circuit itinerary treats it as a stop, not a detour.
Know before you fly
A short strip means light aircraft only — which is what island-hopping charters are anyway — and daylight operations, so plan arrivals and departures inside the day. Facilities are minimal: think rural airstrip, not terminal, with tricycles and vans a phone call away rather than a taxi rank. Your operator confirms the practical details when they confirm the flight. If Siquijor is your only stop, compare a direct charter against chasing a seat on Sunlight Air's limited Cebu schedule or flying to Dumaguete and taking the ferry — and if your dates are loose, check the empty-legs board for repositioning flights through the region.
