Bantayan is Cebu's own beach island, a flat ring of white sand off the northern tip of the province, and reaching it from the city is the half-day nobody enjoys: a bus or van from the North Bus Terminal to Hagnaya port, three to four hours in good traffic, then a ferry of an hour or so across to Santa Fe. Sugar Beach, Kota Beach and the island-hopping boats to Virgin Island all start from there.

There is no scheduled flight, but there is a runway at Santa Fe, minutes from the resorts, and a chartered Cessna 172 reaches it from Mactan in about 30 minutes, up the east coast of Cebu. It is the lowest-priced leg on this site, listed for the whole aircraft, three seats, live in pesos and dollars. A booking is a request the operator confirms, usually within hours, and nothing is charged until they do.

Because the leg is so short, a same-day return is realistic: fly up in the morning, spend the day on the island, and be back at Mactan for an evening flight out. Holy Week is the exception to plan around, when the island fills and the queue at Hagnaya doubles.

Why fly to Bantayan Island

The case for flying is how little of the trip it wastes. Arriving on an international flight into Mactan and driving north means most of a day on the road before the ferry even boards; flying means lunch on the beach. For a family, a group with luggage, or anyone on a short stay, the thirty minutes in the air buys back the day the island was meant to be.

The case for the road and ferry is cost and flexibility. It is a well-trodden route that runs all day and costs a fraction of an aircraft, and a solo traveller with time to spare has no reason to charter. Anyone in between should check the empty legs page: aircraft that drop groups at Santa Fe fly back to Cebu empty, at a steep discount.

About 30 minutes in a light aircraft, against five to six hours door to door by road and ferry.
